FUTURE DIRECTIONS FOR AUSTRALIAN CLIMATE CHANGE SCIENCE
29 February 2008

The Australian Academy of Science will host a workshop on climate change in association with the Department of Climate Change, the Bureau of Meteorology and CSIRO. 'Future directions for Australian climate change science' will be held at The Shine Dome, Australian Academy of Science, Gordon Street, Canberra from 12–13 March 2008.

This workshop aims to bring together the Australian climate change science community to devise a more collaborative national approach to climate change. Key issues such as maximising Australia's climate change science expertise as effectively as possible will be discussed.

Senator Penny Wong, Minister for Climate Change and Water will open the workshop from 9.00–9.15am on Wednesday 12 March.

Key speakers are:

Dr John Church, Chair of the Joint Scientific Committee of the World Climate Research Programme (9.15–9.45am, Wednesday 12 March)

Prof Will Steffen, Director of the Fenner School of Environment and Society, ANU (9.45–10.15am, Wednesday 12 March)

Questions for discussion will include:
  • Are we maximising Australia's climate change science expertise as effectively as we can?

  • In which areas of science does Australia need to take a leading regional or global role?

  • Are there avenues for improving current funding arrangements to support a longer-term strategic approach to research and delivery of climate change science?

  • Is our observation network adequate and does it require separate funding from the general research sector?

  • What needs to be done to replenish and build Australia's climate change science capacity?

  • What collaboration and partnerships would best serve national, regional and global interests?
